Army Lends Hand at Morning Star Boys Ranch

Army Lends Hand at Morning Star Boys Ranch

Members of the U.S. Army Recruiting Office in North Spokane as well the 1041st Transportation Company of the Washington National Guard were at the Morning Star Boys Ranch today finishing up a project started in February by the Navy Sea-Bees.

Ron Irwin, the Communications Coordinator for Morning Star says that the work being done goes deeper than just giving the boys a nicer living space. Irwin thinks having the Army there today gives the boys the opportunity see people in the community trying to help them and gives them an opportunity to see people in their peer group giving back.

The partnership started when Irwin asked SFC Justin Musson if he and his soldiers could be involved. Musson was happy to lend a hand. Along with Capt. Jonathan Emery they brought a crew including Non-Commission Officers to take on the task of painting the newly remodeled Murphy House.

Fairchild families upset sequester cuts hitting school

Military families in Spokane are now bracing for cuts to their children's education as part of the sequester, and spoke out about the cuts at a roundtable held by U.S. Senator Patty Murray.

It is a stressful time for the parents, teachers and administrators as right now everything is very up in the air, but they all say these cuts will have a significant impact on military kids and their future.

When it's reading time at Michael Anderson Elementary the preschoolers sit on the classroom carpet and put on their listening ears. On Tuesday they had a special guest for reading time, U.S. Senator Patty Murray.

"I completely enjoyed reading a book today to young kids," she said.

But she wasn't just there to read. She was also there to listen to military families talk about their sequester concerns.

"It is real, it is coming, it will impact military families in the community," Murray said.

The cuts could be significant. The Medical Lake School District might have to slash 10-percent of their budget, or $480,000. The hardest hit school? Michael Anderson Elementary aboard Fairchild Air Force Base.

Kurt Busch in Spokane practicing for STP Gas Booster 500

The loud roar coming from the Spokane County raceway is Kurt Busch and his Furniture Row Chevy. The Denver-based racing team is using the short oval track to practice for the upcoming STP Gas Booster 500 in Ridgeway, VA.

Busch is currently 13th in the Sprint Cup standing and his next race will be the STP Gas Booster 500 in two weeks. So his team is in Spokane making adjustments to the front and back end of the car to better handle the short track in Martinsville, which is nicknamed the paper clip.

Martinsville Speedway is only .526 miles long, making it the shortest track in the Sprint Cup Series.

"Oh Martinsville is a tough one. You can be fast all day and come down to a pit strategy call at the end," he said.

Before he hits the track at Martinsville practice is a must; getting the car set up even more important.

"The rear end game changed a little bit with how you can make adjustments on the Sprint Cup cars, so we are just making runs with that, and you have to make long runs to see how the tire wear is," Busch explained.

Team KXLY 4 Hank is rocking Schweitzer

Team KXLY 4 Hank is rocking Schweitzer

Five years ago someone called and said, "Mark this little boy needs help and we need you to talk about it." Then I met Hank.

Adorable and chilled to the bone as he came to one of my live shots on location, huddled in a shed I got to know him and every year after that we got to know a little more.

Finally last year after Henry came into the studio it was decided that not only would we promote the 24 Hours of Schweitzer but KXLY would fiild a team, cut a check, get donations, the works.

A miserable year weather wise, driving rain, sleet and ice slowed all attempts  and we had a blast, soaked, cold and loving it.

This year we have another team and the weather is beautiful and more money is being raised to help research into Cystinosis. Thats what Hank (Henry) has and I just watched Tricia feed him his meds through a G Tube..they don't make him near as sick as two years ago.

Money from events like this made that happen. Henry is doing well..there is no known cure and the crystals that form in his organs continue to battle with the meds he gets every six hours , every day.

PLease help us help Henry.
