Race of Wits

Race of Wits

Bloomsday is just around the corner and even though the road race isn't until May competitors in the Cooperate Cup competition are already racing...at least for the title of best team name.

Bloomsday sponsors and organizers announced this year's top team names today. They have shortened the list from 300 to 25 with the top three slated to be announced after Bloomsday in the Inlander Souvenir Results Booklet. The first place team receives a plaque and will be honored guests at the annual awards luncheon. The Spokane Fire Department won last year's battle of wits sporting "Feeling the Burn" as their team name.

Army Lends Hand at Morning Star Boys Ranch

Army Lends Hand at Morning Star Boys Ranch

Members of the U.S. Army Recruiting Office in North Spokane as well the 1041st Transportation Company of the Washington National Guard were at the Morning Star Boys Ranch today finishing up a project started in February by the Navy Sea-Bees.

Ron Irwin, the Communications Coordinator for Morning Star says that the work being done goes deeper than just giving the boys a nicer living space. Irwin thinks having the Army there today gives the boys the opportunity see people in the community trying to help them and gives them an opportunity to see people in their peer group giving back.

The partnership started when Irwin asked SFC Justin Musson if he and his soldiers could be involved. Musson was happy to lend a hand. Along with Capt. Jonathan Emery they brought a crew including Non-Commission Officers to take on the task of painting the newly remodeled Murphy House.

Cougar Crimson license plate craze continues

Cougar Crimson license plate craze continues

More Washington state drivers than ever before are seeing red – in the form of Cougar Crimson.

Since the new crimson Washington State University vehicle plates went on sale in early 2012, they’ve been selling at a clip that outpaces all other specialty plates in the state. Today, the new crimson plate has been mounted to the bumpers of more than 7,000 vehicles from Makah Bay to Newport and from Blaine to Goldendale.

Sally van Boheemen, the WSU Alumni Association’s 1st-vice president and mother of a proud WSU grad, said sales of the new plate over the past 12 months have driven the total number of active WSU plates on Washington roads to 16,257, making it by far the most popular of the state’s specialty license plates.

You know that person.. the retired woman or man who reads with students at your kids' school, delivers meals to shut ins, or keeps the church clean and organized.  You can get them the recognition they deserve!  The search is on for Washington's outstanding senior volunteer.

The Salute to Senior Service program, sponsored by Home Instead, Inc., the franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network, honors the contributions of adults 65 and older who give at least 15 hours a month of volunteer service to their favorite causes.

Loyalty registration, which runs until Jan. 30, costs only $35. After that the price to sign up steadily rises the closer we get to the event.

“Resolve to make 2013 your dirtiest yet and we guarantee to make that happen for you in one unforgettable morning of feasting on filth, groveling through grime, delighting in dirt, and wallowing in mud rather than self-pity,” a news release from Dirty Dash said.
