'Spare A Square' project helping those in our community

KXLY is teaming up with Project Beauty Share and Northwest Harvest to put on the "Spare A Square TP Drive" this month.

This year's goal is to raise 25,000 toilet paper rolls. Dozens of local charities struggle to provide this basic personal hygiene item every year.

One of those charities is St. Margaret's, a homeless shelter for women and children on Spokane's lower south hill.

Linda is one woman who will benefit from the drive, she is a single mother of 9 children. She was homeless for 2 years before moving into the shelter 9 months ago.

She says she doesn't know where she'd be today without the help of Project Beauty Share and St. Margaret's.

"You have a caseworkers to help, you have friends and, ya know, a bed to sleep on. And you have a bathroom, you can take a shower. We didn't have that last year. We didn't have nothing. No income. Ya know, we were on the street. We had to go to the UGM (Union Gospel Mission). It was hard," Linda said.

Linda is working to get her driver's license and a job so she can move out of the shelter.

Spokane County Regulators pull a 727 aircraft to victory

Spokane County Regulators pull a 727 aircraft to victory

How fast can you pull a 727 aircraft on your own? Not very far. It takes a team and that was evident Saturday afternoon as the Spokane County Regulators pulled a FedEx plane 12 feet to victory in 6.59 seconds.

It’s easy to spot the team’s captain, Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich. His jersey number from college carried over to the charitable football team who often support organizations like Wounded Warriors. The mutt team of strong men left no slack in the rope at Spokane International Airport's tarmac leaving other teams in the dust.

Why would anyone want to pull a heavy plane anyway? The contest benefits the Special Olympics which is an event Knezovich supports every February by jumping into a freezing lake.

“I really love those athletes. They overcome a lot and do it for the right reasons,” Knezovich said.

Wondering how to pull your own plane? Safety instructors warned participants to not try this at home, but good luck finding a 727 aircraft with a rope attached to it sitting around willy-nilly. Here’s some tips:

Weekend news team races for Sally's House

Weekend news team races for Sally's House

Start your engines, Spokane! On Saturday, August 25th, Aaron Luna, Ben Kaplan, Tom Giles and I will race fast karts to raise money for The Salvation Army of Spokane's Sally's House. It's emergency foster care - the only of its kind in the Inland Northwest.

Last year, Aaron and I gave the track at the Spokane Kart Racing Association's grounds a spin and had a blast. This year, instead of a twisty-turny track we'll be on an oval track, which means more opportunity for hair-raising passes!

Come out to watch us take each other out and donate to Sally's House. The race starts at noon out in Airway Heights at 12402 West Sprague Avenue.

Local film maker seeking donations

Lights, Camera, Action! - The rolling hills of the Palouse set the stage for a locally produced film about a feuding family finding peace in the midst of tragedy.

The movie is called "The Merry Graingers" and its been a labor of love for Serena Belsby who wrote the script after a family member died a few years ago.

According to Belsby, the movie opens with the Grainger family preparing for their father's funeral.  As the film progresses, relationships change and they begin to enjoy each others company.

"We take the ride with them and see a bit of ourselves in them," writes Belsby

"It ends on an upbeat note and we realize they are going to be okay and they are going to start to accept one another warts and all. The film is about hope and acceptance."

With an Independent Film Project sponsorship, Belsby has had enough money to shoot the movie but now she needs help finishing it.

Salvation Army will have about 3,500 backpacks available for distribution

With the start of school almost around the corner, the Salvation Army was able to get a big donation to help supply children in the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene area with new school supplies and backpacks.

The big donation comes from Cenex Zip Trip who raised money by asking customers to donate $1 or more during each purchase. They raised more than $25,000 and should be able to hand out about 3,500 backpacks filled with supplies this year.

For those in need of a backpack and school supplies can come to the distribution event at 222 E. Indiana on August 23 starting at 8 a.m.

Parents will need to bring photo identification, proof of residency like a bill connected to your home address and proof of children like a school registration card.
