Salvation Army will have about 3,500 backpacks available for distribution

With the start of school almost around the corner, the Salvation Army was able to get a big donation to help supply children in the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene area with new school supplies and backpacks.

The big donation comes from Cenex Zip Trip who raised money by asking customers to donate $1 or more during each purchase. They raised more than $25,000 and should be able to hand out about 3,500 backpacks filled with supplies this year.

For those in need of a backpack and school supplies can come to the distribution event at 222 E. Indiana on August 23 starting at 8 a.m.

Parents will need to bring photo identification, proof of residency like a bill connected to your home address and proof of children like a school registration card.

Happy birthday, Spokane Humane Society!

Happy birthday, Spokane Humane Society!

Join the Spokane Humane Society as they celebrate their 115th birthday this Saturday at 6607 North Havana Street from 11 am - 2 pm.  They are inviting all of their four-legged "alumni" and their forever families back to the shelter for the celebration.

The Spokane Humane Society has a lot of great activities planned for the party.  Animals and their owners from each year can gather for special photos. Everyone is welcome to bring pets they have adopted from the Spokane Humane Society so they can interact with everyone.  You can also bring and share photos of your pets, tour the facility and see the new spay/neuter clinic.  They will even hold a special memorial for all of the pets that have passed away.

Also, local area dog groups will be on hand to display some of their favorite dog activities including frisbee chasing, agility training, obedience training and even a few dance moves.

For the past 115 years, the Spokane Humane Society has sought to provide a safe clean shelter, food, medical assistance and forever homes for abandoned and homeless animals.  They are hoping you will help them celebrate all of these years of service this Saturday..

Liberty Lake Golf Tournament will support "Women & Children's Free Restaurant" in Spokane

The Women &Children's free restaurant and Community Kitchen is a vital safety net that fills nutritional gaps for women and children in need across our area. The key component is the WCFR provides service with dignity and respect both within the community and kitchen.

This mission statement is one the of the many good reasons The Washington Association of Landscapers decided to make the Women & Children's Free Restaurant the beneficicary of their golf tournament. I recently had a chance to talk with one of the chairs of the tournament, Derek Collett ,to find out why he's so passionate about this charity.

Q: Tell me your roll in the charity golf tournament?

A: Myself and Micah Leavitt are co-chairs of the WALP/WCFR Charity Golf Classic. Ourselves plus other committee members of Washington Association of Landscape professionals have worked to put together the team format, acquiring donation/auction items, and marketing of the event!

Q: How did you guys choose the WCFR?

A: We researched to find a 100% local charity with all proceeds to stay within the community. Through our research WCFR stood out. Because of their dedication to families in need we thought it was the perfect fit for what WALP wanted to do within the Spokane community.

Appreciating foster parents all month long

This is a special month, recognizing a group of people who sacrifice so much for children. It is Foster Parent Appreciation Month, and, Families for Kids is honoring those who have offered their hearts, home, and time over the past year. They are calling it “A Day In May”.

Did you know foster parents:

  • may be asked to take a child or children at any hour of the day or night, with little notice or information?
  • may have to drive children many miles for dental or medical health care services?
  • may have to participate in many meetings with multiple professionals and birth families while providing a safe, stable home?
  • work through problems with the foster children in their home on really tough days when they've considered quitting?

If you know foster parents, be sure to let them know how much they are appreciated!

Adorable Practical Joke: Send a Friend a GOAT

Adorable Practical Joke: Send a Friend a GOAT

You see all sorts of interesting things walking through the Garland District, but an adorable baby goat really took me by surprise this morning! The sweet little armful is on a special mission this week: she's raising money for the Wishing Star Foundation!

It's "Send a Friend a Goat" week, and here's how it works: for a $50 donation to Wishing Star, you can have the baby goat delivered to an unsuspected friend or co-worker.

She'll be making these unannounced visits through Friday. The recipient will be asked to make a donation to Wishing Star to have the goat removed from the premises.

In my case, I might want to keep it. The goat couldn't be more cute and cuddly.

Last year, Wishing Star raised more than $20,000 during the Send a Friend a Goat campaign. You can visit their website to participate
