KXLY viewers make a difference for Team Gleason

KXLY viewers make a difference for Team Gleason

Today, the clicking and liking paid off. Today, kxly4's Nadine Woodward handed over a check made out to the Gleason Initiative Foundation to the tune of more than $1,600. All the money raised came from one simple act: people clicked 'like' on KXLY's Facebook in March.

You answered the call after we presented the story of Spokane native Steve Gleason.

Gleason, a Gonzaga Prep grad and WSU football and baseball standout, made a name for himself on the national scale as a special teams standout for the New Orleans Saints. Last year, the seemingly invincible young man was nearly stopped in his tracks by a devastating diagnosis. Gleason has ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. We sat down with him in late February and he shared his story. So many of you wanted to help. So many of you stepped up.

For every new 'like' on the KXLY's Facebook  in March, we donated a quarter to Team Gleason. Today's check, presented to Steve's dad Mike Gleason, was the result of those efforts. But, it's not enough. Team Gleason needs your support to help Steve with his mission. He's determined to find a cure, but also to help those living with ALS live fully, despite losing the things the rest of us take for granted.

Bloomsday In The Movies

Bloomsday In The Movies

How many different ways can you promote something as basic as running? According to the design team promoting the 36th annual Bloomsday Race, there are plenty. And this year, it's promoting the race through downtown Spokane with takeoff posters that look like motion pictures.

Each of the four posters features a different type of movie - one about zombies, a musical, a movie about a monster, and another about a caveman.

Steve Merryman of Sigma designed the series. Sigma produces most of Bloomsday ads and printed material. And, it's the second year it's used the faux movie posters to promote the race of 50,000.

With 36 years under its belt and tens of thousands of runners every year, it's clear that Bloomsday organizers are doing their job when it comes to advertising. If these fun ads have been enough to get you to strap on your sneakers for a seven and a half mile run/walk , you can still register online.

WSP Chief Thanks Citizens in Wake of Trooper Death

WSP Chief Thanks Citizens in Wake of Trooper Death

It was a time for our state to mourn. Last week, a Washington State Patrol trooper shot in the line of duty was laid to rest. While most of us could not be along the processional route when Trooper Tony Radulescu was brought to his final resting place, many grieved across the state. Now, the chief of the Washington State Patrol is saying thank you.

Trooper Tony Radulescu was shot and killed in late February by a man he stopped for a traffic violation. It happened on a dark highway near the Kitsap County town of Gorst. The man who killed Trooper Radulescu shot and killed himself a few hours later as the SWAT team was closing in. Radulescu's death was the first trooper death in the line of duty in 13 years. Tuesday, WSP Chief John Batiste sent a letter to media outlets across the state, hoping to pass on his department's thanks for the support during this diffucult time.

Here is that letter:

The Washington State Patrol would like to thank all the wonderful people of Washington who showed their compassion and care following the tragic death Trooper Tony Radulescu.

2012 Kids' Art Contest

2012 Kids' Art Contest

It's time for the kids to sharpen their colored pencils. The 2012 Kids' Art Contest is underway. The winner of this competition will have their work displayed on 3.5 million voter pamphlets sent to people across the State.

The Office of Secretary of State is hosting the contest asking 4th and 5th graders to enter their best work. "If I Could Vote" is the theme for this year. The State says the contest is a chance for Washington's youngest citizens to get involved with the elections process.

The winner's work will be featured on Washington State Voter's Pamphlets and will receive a surprise visit from Secretary of State Sam Reed at school.

Students can enter their work here. Good luck! Artists have until April 16th to submit their entries.
