Bullets and Ink: A Man's Spin On Life

Bullets and Ink: A Man's Spin On Life

Doyle Wheeler approaches life just like he does pens; everything is possible. Throw anything his way and he will make it work for him.

The first lathe Wheeler ever received was from his father. He tinkered with it off and on, not really committing to the craft but enjoying the rhythm of turning a pen. The first ones he ever made became Christmas gifts for family and friends but he insists they weren't any good.

It's what every budding artist – excuse me, craftsman – would say of their early work.

Craftsmanship is in Wheeler's blood. His grandparents built their home in Spokane from the ground up.

Season of Giving Food Drive

Season of Giving Food Drive

Time is running out to donate to the Season of Giving Food Drive. KXLY, Yoke's Fresh Markets and Second Harvest are working together to collect food for Spokane's hungry. The drive ends on Thursday.

Second Harvest says it's never seen a need so great in its 40 year history and hopes that the community will step up and donate.

Giving is made easy thanks to Yoke's where you can donate cash and food, or buy a pre-made bag of food to donate. Another easy way to help: look up the KXLY Facebook fan page and donate directly.

KXLY hopes an extra big push on the final day will encourage people to give.

Honor Flight Takes More WWII Vets To D.C.

Inland Northwest Honor Flight will be taking another 26 veterans to Washington D.C. Friday.

The group plans to meet at Spokane International Airport at 11 a.m. Friday to send the vets off on their trip.

This year funding has kept them from taking fewer veterans than normal.  They usually send 37 vets on the honor flight.

The honor flight group still has 196 people on the waiting list for the trip, and they are working hard to raise funds to continue to get take more World War II vets back to the capital.

INWHF will have taken 400 people on the flight upon completion of this trip.

EWU Fraternity Holds Haunted House Fundraiser

It's that time of year again for haunted houses and ghostly ghouls. But for one Eastern Washington University fraternity it's time for a haunted fundraiser for their philanthropy group.

Sigma Phi Epsilon is turning their fraternity house into a haunted mansion to raise money for the charity Youth AIDS. Last year they donated more than $500, but this year they hope to raise even more.

The haunted house will be open Friday and Saturday, October 28th and 29th from 7:00 - 11:00 p.m.  It costs $5 to get in and all the proceeds go to charity.

Here's a look at their haunted house from 2009.

Remember when KXLY had Buick "News Mobiles"?

Remember when KXLY had Buick "News Mobiles"?

During a recent KXLY 4 Free Friday, Mark Peterson, Good Morning Northwest anchor, found himself at Columbia Tractor near Cheney. A good friend, Tim, approached him with major television news memorabilia.

Tim slapped an aging pamphlet on the table and told Mark: “Here. You owe me a beer.”

It was promotional literature for “KXLY-TV 4”, circa 1963. Back when the station was still affiliated with CBS.

There was a special section for our “News Mobiles”, Buicks, that would “seek out and find the news-- when it breaks-- where it breaks!”

“Besides being efficient “News Mobiles,” the KXLY fleet is equipped with the latest emergency rescue equipments. Each KXLY newsman is also trained and registered in the administration of First Aid.”
