Schools across the nation to celebrate a month of walking to school

Schools across the nation to celebrate a month of walking to school

The weather is quickly cooling off from summer, so why not walk to school? Bundling up is as fun as a barrel of monkeys and creates character, right? Plus, when kids are older, they can literally say: “Back in my day, I walked to school up hill both ways and in the snow.”

October is International Walk to School Month which means participating schools and organizations will bring awareness to community issues like physical activity, clean air, pedestrian safety and family connections.

The group behind Walk to School Month started in 1997 as a way to bring together community leaders and kids to build awareness of walkable communities.

Salvation Army Charity Celebrity Go-Kart Race

Salvation Army Charity Celebrity Go-Kart Race

Part of the job as an anchor or reporter entails philanthropy work, and KXLY's Colleen O'Brien headed up one philanthropy that consisted of pure fun, racing go-karts. Tough work, I know. She gathered a KXLY crew to race in the first ever Salvation Army Charity Celebrity Go-Kart Race.

Spokane Kart Racing Association asked for her help to make the event happen. It's trying to spread the word about the track in Airway Heights. Colleen got the Salvation Army on board, in which she just so happens to be a board member.

Coats 4 Kids will be collecting coats on Sunday, the last day of the Interstate Fair

Coats 4 Kids will be collecting coats on Sunday, the last day of the Interstate Fair

Coats 4 Kids is an annual fundraiser that has been collecting coats for children for 26 years. They start collecting in mid-September so children can keep warm just in time for the cold and wet fall and the colder and snowy winter.

KXLY has teamed up with the fundraiser to help collect coats at the Spokane Interstate Fair. On Sunday, September 18th, visitors who bring new or gently used coats to donate will let one child 13 and under in free  to the fair from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Coat drop-offs will be at the entry gates.

If you're headed up to the fair for a variety of events on the 18th, including the full-sized car demolition derby, don't forget to bring a new or gently used children's coat that you can donate. That Sunday is the last day of the fair.

Cheney Community Center Reopens, Finally

In a week when temperatures are reaching well into the 90's, it's difficult to imagine the record-setting winter of 2008-2009.  More than 6 feet of snow fell during a four-week period starting in early December, shutting down businesses, making roads impassable, and collapsing roofs throughout our region.  If you need a reminder of just how bad it was, watch the video above.

Salvation Army Teams With Spokane Indians For Donations

Donations in retail bins are low this summer, according to the Salvation Army.  With back to school just around the corner, the Salvation Army is teaming up with the Spokane Indians to help provide kids with the basic school supplies they need.

The Spokane Indians are hosting Salvation Army Night Tuesday asking fans to Burst the Bus and drop off school supply donations.

The big red school bus will be in front of Avista Stadium accepting donations.  The need has increased greatly over the last few years.
